By what he said, he was changing something in the computer and a screw dropped on the powersupply, which screwed that up and probably caused a power surge to the other hardware frying it.

When I was futzing around and playing hard-drive musical chairs, I lost a screw into the depths of the case. While everything was fine initially, with the case open and lying on its side, when I turned it upright and bolted the cover back on, said screw came loose and lodged itself between a couple hot leads on the motherboard. Powered it up and ka-zappo.

Back up and in the game, on essentially the same old hardware. If only this had happened back in February when I got my tax return...alas!
