What is Open Gl, software, and D3D? I seen it in the Video tab in the options menu in sven. Also, why is it important to use Open GL?

They're video renderers. All you need to know is, OpenGL is the best renderer because its lighting is amazing, but some older videocards arent OpenGL compatible. D3D is the 2nd best thing, its Direct X...6 i think. Software is pretty much no video, its almost runned all on your processor if im right.

Half-life is for the most part an opengl game so it would run best under that mode. For half-life2 valve switched from using primarily opengl to using direct x instead, you could use opengl in half-life 2 in the leaked beta of the game.

doom3 is also an opengl game.

Directx is a proprietary renderer made by Microsoft and only supported on windows, opengl is open source so it can be used on windows and many other operating systems, like mac, and Linux OSes.

open gl and d3d are both diferent source codes used to render stuff
d3d is direct x 3d
direct is is more of an emulater though to make games run
when the first windows operating syste came our, or if it was windows 95, cant remeber
hp released computers with a lion king game i believe
the game fucked and didn't work right
so microsoft created direct x

just so know know
open gl renders pretty much every pixel of texture as a circle as opposed to the regualar square
it looks better
if you'v played quake 2
in the "system" video setting
it looked like crap
but in "open gl" it looked dramaticly better and you noticed circles that were once squares

Reminds me of back in the Quake1 days, they came out with an opengl version (GLQuake) that was absolutely brilliant! The difference was night & day - provided you had the right video card (if any, lol). I had an awesome Voodoo2 - Woohoo! 8mb of video ram!!! (very few games took full advantage of it's awesomeness at the time).

Speaking of Q1... HOLY CRAP!!! How come I'm just now finding out about Tenebrae? This looks awesome!!! Anyone with an old Quake cd (diskettes? lol) laying around might want to dust it off!

(would've posted a link to the site, but it was giving me issues)
